An Iconic-Comic Double Bill!

Lyric Theatre proudly presents two of the most famous one act music productions in the repertoire, Gilbert and Sullivan’s first collaborative effort, Trial By Jury, and Giacomo Puccini’s comic farce Gianni Schicchi.

******  GIANNI SCHICCHI   ******

Puccini’s last completed opera is a masterpiece of character and wit, and shows the great master at the height of his powers. Featuring the famous soprano aria “O mio Babbino, caro” the cast is truly an ensemble; there is no chorus and every singer plays a unique character.

Featuring a new English translation created for Lyric Theatre, Puccini’s comic masterpiece is based on a true story, centered around the Donati family, sadly bereaved at the recent death of their beloved Uncle Buoso.  Or are they?  Grieving soon turns to thoughts of the rich man’s will, with both young and old hungering for a piece of the old man’s estate. Unfortunately for them, the miserly old Buoso has left everything to a monastery!  What to do?  Call on Gianni Schicchi to save the day!

******  TRIAL BY JURY  ******

Gilbert & Sullivan’s only opera without spoken dialog is a light hearted, farcical satire on the legal system.  Written in 1875, it was the now-famous team’s first joint success in theater, and has been regularly performed ever since.

Trial By Jury promises us a typical day in an English Court, in the same way that an episode of People’s Court is a typical day in a modern court. Angelina, a young, jilted bride, is suing her fiancée Edwin for breach of promise.  Years before the “pre-nup,” marriage was already a financial as well as romantic transaction!  Will Angelina find justice?

Come and enjoy these two iconic-comedies as we present both masterworks in the present day, poking fun at our modern lives, beliefs, fashions, and yes, “reality” TV!
